Refractometers need calibration from time to time and in this video I am going to walk you through adjusting the calibration on your refractometer.
When we calibrate a refractometer we are performing a 1-point calibration. Anytime you're doing a 1-point calibration, that point needs to be as close to the target level. .

Refractometers are rarely accurate over their entire scale. So while RO/DI will work for calibrating at 0ppt, that doesn't help much when measuring saltwater. You could be off by . Trust the calibration fluid. Refractometers can be only calibrated to a single point. The calibration fluid is 1.026, the salinity you're trying to achieve is 1.026 (around there) so therefore you calibrate to 1.026. check the calibration fluid .
Anytime you're doing a 1-point calibration, that point needs to be as close to the target level. The farther you get from your calibration point, the larger the errors will be. So calibrating with RODI is great if you want to read RODI. But if you calibrate with RODI and read seawater, you'll get errors.Adjust the calibration screw so that the refractometer reads exactly zero. Clean the daylight plate and the main prism assembly with a soft, damp cloth. Place 2 to 3 drops of the test solution and take a reading as before. Interpret the .A contentious topic for sure. No fighting please! 😊 Anyway, I just listened to episode 101 of the Reef Beef podcast. I've always been in the calibration fluid over RODI/distilled camp because (I assume) that the recommended ratio for mixing water is based on calibration to a known standard (i.e. calibration fluid) rather than just to RODI/distilled.

That's some bad advice from years ago that gets repeated over and over. You don't calibrate a Ph probe to 1 or 14.you calibrate near the median of .
Can I use RODI to calibrate for ZERO I would prefer to use Hanna cal but getting one may prove difficult . Reply. Mar 10, 2022 #2 . I'm not sure with store bought solutions but I know with the diy ones the solution to calibrate a refractometer is not the same as the one to calibrate a conductivity probe/tester. I'm not sure if Hanna sells a . so their refractometer to measure 0 tds rodi water should differ from 0. this is sounding more and more like bad practice. 0 is 0. maybe you guys get some alibaba refractometers from somewhere i cant find on my globe, but i really question some motives when calibration fluid is used to supercede a good unit. btw. i have calibration fluid. i .
100% if you calibrate correctly(25c temp, rodi and refractometer both at that temp) your 35ppt solution will read 35ppt otherwise the solution might have something wrong.. As you said, always remember to clean with rodi after use, then wipe clean the glass gently. I calibrate every time I use the instrument..digital refractometer eliminates the uncertainty associated with mechanical refractometers and is easily portable for ship, shore or home use. The MA887 refractometer is an optical device that is simple and quick to use. Samples are measured after a simple user calibration with distilled or deionized water. Within seconds, the A couple months ago i was informed of how inaccurate it could be because of the rodi calibration so I mixed Randy's calibration solution using Morton iodized salt. To my surprise it was dead on perfect!! I have no idea why some refractometers hold their calibration better than others nor why some may calibrate properly with rodi.
You can make your own 35 ppt refractometer standard with this recipe, if you have a scale: Refractometers and Salinity Measurement by Randy Holmes-Farley - Reefkeeping.com Reef Aquarium Salinity: Homemade Calibration Standards by Randy Holmes-Farley - Reefkeeping.com This recipe for 35 ppt seawater standard: "3.65 weight percent sodium .Clean and dry prism surface after use. Check instrument calibration regularly, once per month is recommended. Do not add test fluid back to container. Tightly replace lid to prevent evaporation. Note: If using and ATC Refractometer, allow 45 seconds before reading. Ingredients: Sodium chloride, RODI waterIf you want to get super nit picky perhaps you can do better, but what I get from this is that my refractometer, RODI calibration is fine. Hope that helps clarify our past conversation for some people. If you have questions comments concerns feel free to start up a fair, open, and honest discussion, I'm glad to talk science w anyone.
But if your refractometer measures 35ppt as 35ppt and with the same calibration setting also measures pure water at zero, then congratulations your scale is linear to seawater and you can use that refrac at any salinity number and you can calibrate it all day long by zeroing it out to RODI water or using any other known value. That said, with MY refractometer, I have calibrated and checked calibration with RODI and 1.026 solution calibration and it was the same, as compared against my Milwaukee digital refractometer. If need be, I will buy a NIST calibrated hydrometer to end this debate once and for . I have a ATC refractometer and when I first got it, it says to calibrate it using RODI water and set it to the bottom line which is 1.000 (0). I have been using it for a few months and randomly remembered that you may have to recalibrate it sometimes. So I checked it with RODI again and it was at 1.010 (10). So I put it back to the bottom line. Refractometer calibration materials are available with up to 5 decimal place RI and up to 2 decimal place Brix. Calibration Oils Calibration Oils are organic compounds that cover the range 1.47 -1.56 RI at the upper end of the Brix scale and beyond. Calibration Oils have a shelf life of 12-months.
I've been calibrating my refractometer with RODI for the past 2 years. I now know that it's best to calibrate with calibration solution. I want to switch to calibrating with the solution with my next water change, but the problem that I ran into is when I calibrate using the solution my tanks salinity is crazy low (in the low 20's). I know most refractometers shouldn't be calibrated with rodi water (although D-D specifically advises to calibrate their refractometer with rodi water), but it was what I had at hand and at the store it was spot on. Reply. Jul 15, 2019 #18 OP . OP. Ardeus Valuable Member View Badges. Excellence Award. Reef Tank 365. My Tank Thread. Joined The result is that if you calibrate it to 0 it probably will not read 35ppt with a fresh bottle of calibration solution. Generally it's off slightly unless you have a more precise unit. Calibrate it to a reference sample similar to what you are .
Will RO/DI water work to calibrate a refractometer?
Personally, I'm ok with the +/- 0.002 s.g. variance with this unit, as I always calibrate with RODI water and consistently mix my water to the same salinity every time. Regardless of the potential variance, if there were a difference between my tank's current salinity versus the water change water, I doubt a 20% water change dilution will be .
Calibration of refractometers is a pet to me. Whilst two popular seawater refractometers (the D-D and the Red Sea) claim to be seawater refractometers. Both are ATC refractometers. One has a calibration temperature of 20c the other at 25c. This difference should be indicated by a different SG indication corresponding to the Salinity scale. Add a few drops of calibration solution to the prism and close the cover. Wait about 45 seconds for the ATC to correct for temperature. If the reading does not match the calibration solution, make small adjustments with the calibration screw. Your refractometer’s manual may say to calibrate to 0-salinity using distilled or RO water. You use a Refractometer to measure Salinity, RODI has no Salinity, Why would you calibrate to a measurement your not even interested in? It makes more sense since your looking for a reading of ~1.026 to use the proper calibration fluid for setting it . That means using a calibration fluid will inaccurately calibrate the Veegee. Make sense, so apparetnly you are supposed to use distilled or RODI water to calibrate this. At 20C pure water has a RI of 1.333 or sg of 1.000. This instrument is accurate enough to calibrate at 1.000 and be accurate across the board.
I use a Veegee as well, the only true refractometer on the market, calibrate with RODI to 0.000 and will be accurate at any level. Other refractometers ATC to 25C even though reference solution are set to 20C. There are two big reasons that is fallacious, but the most problematic is that most refractometers sold to hobbyists are brine refractometers repurposed to use in seawater. Such a refractometer, even if PERFECTLY manufactured and PERFECTLY calibrated with RO water WILL NECESSARILY be off for measuring seawater. That is the scam by resellers.
